Free-To-Play MMORPGs

Massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) have always been big. They provide cheap entertainment and escapism from the comfort of your home. Currently, World of Warcraft is in the lead with over 11 million players. Of course, like lots of MMORPGs, World of Warcraft is subscription based. If you want to try out a few free games similar to World of Warcraft without the monthly payment, here are two good ones.

Mabinogi (video game)

Mabinogi. This cute Korean-designed game is a great way to unwind. The controls are click-based so you don’t have to bumble with the keyboard if you don’t want to. The game play is relaxing and there are lots of things to do. You can go on a dungeon raid, plant crops, raise animals, buy a house and lots more – it definitely fits the “virtual life simulation” style of MMORPG. Mabinogi is ran entirely on donation and their store. You can buy useful items for real money and make leveling and traveling easier if you want, but it is not required.

Runes of Magic. Imitating World of Warcraft closely, Runes of Magic has made a place for itself on the internet. It has a store like Mabinogi where you can buy useful in-game items, but you are free to play and never have to pay anything. If you want a World of Warcraft experience without the subscription, RoM is a quick fix. It has very customizable characters, even more than World of Warcraft and has lots of other players to interact with.

World of Warcraft Careful Character Creation

World of Warcraft

You took the plunge. You bought World of Warcraft. You have finished installing it, picked a server and are ready to make your first character. When creating your character, read all the little text boxes on the right side of the screen. This tells you what role you will be playing in the game, as a healer, damage dealer or protector.

There are ten classes to choose from in all, but some are not available to certain races. The classes are very different, so try a few. There are also six races on each faction. If you have friends that are already playing on that server and want to play with you, make sure that you are on the right faction or you won’t be able to communicate. Also, if you picked a PVP or player-versus-player server, the other faction can attack you.

Once you decide on a class and race, name yourself carefully. Random gibberish names can make it hard for other players to tell you apart from hackers – so try to pick something with syllables. Once you’re sure everything on your character is right, click create. Click the “Enter World” button to get started.

After you have logged in, you will be in your race’s newbie zone – a friendly, guided area to learn the controls of the game. You will get to try out you class spells and skills. If you feel like you’re playing the wrong class – create a new character and pick a new class until you feel like you got it right. Most classes grow into their skills at level 40.
