  1. BioShock. If you like psychological thrillers – BioShock might be your thing. You get a variety of gruesome guns, a thrilling storyline that keeps you guessing and loads of completely crazy baddies to shoot.
  2. Borderlands. For classic non-stop shooting game play, Borderlands offers a more random storyline with a hint of role-playing. You can get custom guns, but its mostly just about how many things you can kill.
  3. Fallout 3. If you prefer a little FPS with a lot of role-playing, Fallout 3 is for you. You get to traverse an expansive landscape and talk with lots of fun locals. The game play is very unique and is something you have to experience to describe.
  4. Gears of War. This famous game series is almost in it’s own category. If you like amazing FPS games and intriguing story lines combined with big guns – Gears of War should be the first game you buy.
  5. Halo 3. Another extremely well-known game. The Halo series is a science fiction game that has a long unobtrusive story, big guns, constant action and swarms of enemies. A must-have for FPS fans.
  6. Resident Evil 5. The RE series has a long complex story behind it, but you don’t have to known any of it to love this game. Mutant worms combined with zombies and precision shooting makes for a unique game style.

Free-To-Play MMORPGs

Massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) have always been big. They provide cheap entertainment and escapism from the comfort of your home. Currently, World of Warcraft is in the lead with over 11 million players. Of course, like lots of MMORPGs, World of Warcraft is subscription based. If you want to try out a few free games similar to World of Warcraft without the monthly payment, here are two good ones.

Mabinogi (video game)

Mabinogi. This cute Korean-designed game is a great way to unwind. The controls are click-based so you don’t have to bumble with the keyboard if you don’t want to. The game play is relaxing and there are lots of things to do. You can go on a dungeon raid, plant crops, raise animals, buy a house and lots more – it definitely fits the “virtual life simulation” style of MMORPG. Mabinogi is ran entirely on donation and their store. You can buy useful items for real money and make leveling and traveling easier if you want, but it is not required.

Runes of Magic. Imitating World of Warcraft closely, Runes of Magic has made a place for itself on the internet. It has a store like Mabinogi where you can buy useful in-game items, but you are free to play and never have to pay anything. If you want a World of Warcraft experience without the subscription, RoM is a quick fix. It has very customizable characters, even more than World of Warcraft and has lots of other players to interact with.

Kid-Friendly Xbox 360 Games

Once you buy an Xbox, your kids will notice how much fun you’re having playing it and want to join in. Since the Xbox is aimed at an older audience, the games tend to be violent and mature in themes. Don’t despair – Xbox does have some kid-friendly games.

  • Mini Ninjas. Probably for kids that are 10 and up since it takes a little puzzle solving. Mini Ninjas is a cute and fun story that requires no reading skills. Everything is voice acted and the characters add a cute comical element to the seemingly serious story line. A great buy if you like kids games too, because it is entertaining to both kids and adults.
  • Any Lego title – Lego Star Wars, Lego Pirates of the Carribean and so on are all made for a younger crowd. They come in so many movie themes – you are bound to find several that your kid is into.
  • Plants versus Zombies. Even though the craze for this game is down, it is a fantastic game if you have a 10 and up kid. Despite zombies being a main theme, it has only comic violence without blood or gore involved. Also, great if you want to play it too. It has several long two-player modes.
  • The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. Spyro is a classic game and the newest addition to the series still provides entertainment for all ages. Plus, kids love to see the little purple dragon hero flying around and frying things. Again, nothing but comic violence here.

The Sims on PC

When the Sims first came out, it was a hit. Who wouldn’t want to control every aspect of someone’s life? You make characters, build their houses, find them jobs and then make a mess of their lives. It is surprising how entertaining it can be to do the exact same thing you’re doing everyday. Life.

Creating your characters is very detailed in the Sims series – you can change every part of your Sim’s face, their body weight, clothes, hair and their personalities. Once they are made, you can buy a pre-made house or make your very own. Making homes is half the fun of the game, since you can fit it to your Sim’s style. Take your time to pick out the perfect wall paper or build an elaborate masion. Once they have a home, you can go on the hunt for jobs ranging from mayor to science test subject. Expansions add more job options, as well as new clothes and hair.

The original game spawned the Sims 2, then the Sims 3. But the Sims 3 hardly changed anything from the second one. Now that the Sims 2 is cheaper, you might want to buy it instead of the third game. You can get a large chunk of the expansion packs for the same price as the Sims 3 and still control every part of their lives. The biggest changes from Sims 2 to Sims 3 were customizable clothing patterns and picking a good or evil attitude for your Sims.

Overall, the Sims series still provides hours and hours of entertainment no matter which game you pick.

World of Warcraft Careful Character Creation

World of Warcraft

Image via Wikipedia

You took the plunge. You bought World of Warcraft. You have finished installing it, picked a server and are ready to make your first character. When creating your character, read all the little text boxes on the right side of the screen. This tells you what role you will be playing in the game, as a healer, damage dealer or protector.

There are ten classes to choose from in all, but some are not available to certain races. The classes are very different, so try a few. There are also six races on each faction. If you have friends that are already playing on that server and want to play with you, make sure that you are on the right faction or you won’t be able to communicate. Also, if you picked a PVP or player-versus-player server, the other faction can attack you.

Once you decide on a class and race, name yourself carefully. Random gibberish names can make it hard for other players to tell you apart from hackers – so try to pick something with syllables. Once you’re sure everything on your character is right, click create. Click the “Enter World” button to get started.

After you have logged in, you will be in your race’s newbie zone – a friendly, guided area to learn the controls of the game. You will get to try out you class spells and skills. If you feel like you’re playing the wrong class – create a new character and pick a new class until you feel like you got it right. Most classes grow into their skills at level 40.
